The Little Miracles

“Trade your expectation for appreciation and the world changes instantly”

Tony Robbins

There are many things I am grateful for and at this time of year I like to reflect on all of my blessings. Without intending to, there is something that I give thanks for daily, hearing aids. My two-and-a-half-year-old son Marcos was born with hearing loss, and has had hearing aids since he was six months old. It was a big surprise for my husband and I and it was a bit of a struggle to keep his aids in his ears the first year. A few months before he turned two he suddenly became beyond attached to them, didn’t want me to take them out at nap time or bath time or anytime for that matter. The sudden change scared me as I thought that his hearing had worsened. It hasn’t and apparently it is quite common that once these toddlers really begin to talk they don’t want to miss out on a thing!

Although I get frustrated sometimes when I can’t get them in, the tubing comes out of the ear mold, I can’t find batteries etc., I find myself unconsciously expressing my thankfulness daily for these mini-computers that allow my son to hear the world around him. He loves music, plays the guitar, laughs at his farts, speaks English and Spanish and is a very happy boy. I am beyond grateful that he is afforded to hear most of the sounds that I do and every time he hears a plane that we can’t see and he tells me, my heart fills with gratitude.
